My approach to coaching and consulting is rooted in the existential and humanistic domains of psychology, focusing on meaning, purpose, and inner potential.
What is existential psychology?
What is existential psychology?
Existential psychology is based on the premise that life is short, and so it is important to live authentically. This idea of ‘authentic living’ is at the heart of my definition of personal wellness. It means knowing who you are and living with greater self-awareness. It means taking responsibility for your life and your actions. It means living in a way that maximizes your potential as a human being in order to find true and authentic happiness.
When living authentically, it is also important to reflect on life’s biggest questions. Questions like, “Why am I here?” and “What should I be doing?” can help you better understand your place in this world. To this end, it is not enough to simply become more aware of yourself. To find true happiness and peace in life, you must also foster a sense of meaning and purpose. You must wrestle with the questions and wade through the realities of your life. I can help you do so in a productive and healthy way.
What is humanistic psychology?
The goal of humanistic psychology is similar: to help you gain awareness of your inner potential. This is one of the main tenets of self-actualization, described by Maslow as the process of realizing your true potential. Whether coaching individually or in a group setting, this is a main focus of mine: to help individuals gain awareness of their strengths and potentials on all levels, from physical to emotional and spiritual. When talking to clients, I adopt the humanistic principles of genuine acceptance, positive regard, and empathy. I approach meetings with kindness and understanding for the way things have been, all the while encouraging new perspectives and insights in a nonjudgmental and safe environment.
One-on-One Coaching and Advising
I offer individual coaching services in packages of 4 or 8 one-hour sessions. The primary focus of my one-on-one coaching is holistic health improvement, but I am happy to tailor my services based on your specific needs and goals. During the course of your program, we will explore your health and well-being on all levels, including physical, mental/emotional, social, and spiritual. Problem areas will be identified early on and targeted in subsequent sessions. Hands-on strategies for improving your well-being will be offered, culminating in a solid plan for boosting your sense of meaning, purpose, and direction. Close attention will be paid to your spiritual or existential well-being, leaving you better able to find fulfillment in your daily life.
I am located on beautiful Bowen Island, British Columbia. Depending on your location, sessions may be done in-person or over the phone. I am happy to meet in West Vancouver, North Vancouver, at UBC, or in Downtown Vancouver; and of course on Bowen. I am also happy to provide coaching services over the phone or via Skype. Email support (including educational materials) between sessions is included. At completion of your program, you will receive a written summary and report via email. Jumpstart sessions involve 2 one-hour meetings (in-person or by phone). I am happy to offer a preliminary 10-minute consultation by phone free of charge.
